Magic God Packs: what changes in boosters in 2027

What changes in Magic boosters in 2027? Wizards of the Coast announced on October 5, 2026 that, starting with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm (February 5, 2027), the Play Booster goes back to being called the Booster Pack, loses its guaranteed foil and gains God Packs — packs with only rares and mythics, one in every 1,000. The Collector Booster also gets God Packs (one in every 300), but becomes three cards smaller. According to Wizards, the suggested price does not change.

What did Wizards announce?

The announcement came in the article "Updating Our Boosters in 2027", by Blake Rasmussen, and was repeated the same day for stores by WPN (Wizards' official store network). The changes apply to Magic Multiverse sets starting with Nauctis, the first of 2027, followed by Kamigawa: Titanbreach (June 4) and Zhalfir (October 1).

The summary, in five points:

  • Play Booster becomes Booster Pack. According to WPN, "This is a name change, not a new product."
  • No more guaranteed foil in the Booster Pack. Foil commons and uncommons leave the pack; when a foil shows up, it will be a rare or mythic. The rate of foil rares and mythics goes up (Wizards did not disclose the number).
  • Japan Showcase in the Booster Pack. Cards with this treatment, until now exclusive to the Collector Booster, can appear in the Booster Pack's wildcard slot, in traditional foil.
  • Collector Booster with 3 fewer cards. Two commons and one uncommon leave the foil slots, with no replacement. Some foil commons and uncommons remain in the Collector.
  • God Packs in both products. Details in the next section.

What comes in a God Pack?

A God Pack is a booster in which every relevant card is a rare or mythic. It is not sold separately: it shows up at random among the set's regular packs. The official contents:

  • Booster Pack God Pack — 1 in every 1,000 packs: 10 non-foil rares or mythics, 2 non-foil Booster Fun rares or mythics, 2 traditional foil Booster Fun rares or mythics and 1 "You did it!" celebration card — that is, 14 rares/mythics plus the celebration card.
  • Collector Booster God Pack — 1 in every 300 packs: 5 foil Booster Fun rares or mythics, 3 foil default-frame rares or mythics, 3 non-foil Booster Fun rares or mythics, 1 foil land and 1 celebration card.

In Universes Beyond, God Packs are only expected in 2028.

The idea is not new: according to ICv2 and Draftsim, Magic's first God Packs appeared in Journey into Nyx, in 2014, carrying the mythic gods of the Theros block.

Why did Wizards change the boosters?

The company gave three reasons in the announcement. First, foil commons and uncommons have lost their luster for players. Second, people who open Collector Boosters, according to Wizards, mostly skip past those cards. Third, a manufacturing limit: "As booster printing becomes more complex, we need to make trade-offs in both complexity and capacity." Cutting low-rarity foil cards frees up printing space for God Packs and for Japan Showcase in regular packs.

Scryfall prices help explain the argument. On October 13, 2026, of the 81 Reality Fracture (FRA) commons in foil, 80 were worth less than US$ 1 on TCGplayer, with a median of US$ 0.27. Among the 109 foil uncommons, 105 were below US$ 1, with a median of US$ 0.32.

How much is a Japan Showcase worth today?

Japan Showcase is a treatment in which the Japanese Booster Fun team redesigns cards from the set with their own art and frame. In Reality Fracture there were 10 cards, in traditional foil (about 9% of the slot) or fracture foil (about 1%), only in Collector Boosters. In Japanese boosters they come in Japanese; in any other language, in English.

English-language prices according to Scryfall, on October 13, 2026 (dollar = TCGplayer; euro = Cardmarket):

  • The Theorist, Jace Beleren — default non-foil US$ 69.12; Japan Showcase traditional foil US$ 109.26 (€ 47.94); Japan Showcase fracture foil US$ 455.88 (€ 300.04).
  • Emrakul, the Exigent Doom — Japan Showcase traditional foil US$ 64.13 (€ 27.39); fracture foil US$ 360.28 (€ 205.62).
  • Kwia Vigorbloom — Japan Showcase traditional foil US$ 50.42 (€ 17.09).
  • Range of the 10 cards in traditional foil: from US$ 15.74 (Uldaros Theorix) to US$ 109.26 (Jace).

Starting with Nauctis, traditional foil Japan Showcase cards can also appear in the Booster Pack. Wizards did not say how often.

What happens if someone opens a God Pack at a tournament?

WPN advises that, in a Limited event, the player should stop and call the judge or organizer. For competitive events, the recommendation is to celebrate, remove the God Pack, let the player keep it and replace it free of charge with an unopened Booster Pack from the same set. At Regional Championships and the Pro Tour, this replacement is mandatory. At a casual event, such as a prerelease with Player List Only pairings, the store may leave the God Pack in the pool.

On MTG Arena, store packs will get "a take on" God Packs, but they will not appear in Draft or Sealed. Wizards promises more details closer to the Nauctis release.

What changes for buyers, sellers and collectors

  • Booster Pack for drafts and prereleases: the pack becomes more "all or nothing". You no longer get a foil in every pack, but when one shows up it will be a rare or mythic — and it may be a Japan Showcase.
  • Collector Booster: check the Nauctis contents list when it comes out. Using the 15 Magic cards of the Reality Fracture Collector as a reference, three fewer would mean 12 — but Wizards has not yet published the Nauctis total.
  • Foil commons and uncommons from older sets: they no longer come in the Booster Pack, and there will be fewer of them in the Collector. If you have low-rarity foils set aside for cube or Pauper, it is worth cataloguing them before selling in bulk.
  • Reality Fracture Japan Showcase: this is the treatment that changes places. Before selling or trading yours, compare prices — The Theorist, Jace Beleren has its own page on the site and you can see who sells or is looking for the card in Explore.
  • Star Trek and Marvel: Darkhold Destiny: the official announcement does not say whether the rest of the change applies to the 2027 Universes Beyond sets; Draftsim says Star Trek (November 13, 2026) and the 2027 Universes Beyond sets are not affected. See our Star Trek guide.

Our take

Collector Union's opinion, based on the facts above.

The announcement trades volume for excitement. For people who buy Booster Packs to play, losing the common foil barely hurts the wallet: by the Reality Fracture numbers, that card was generally worth less than US$ 0.30. Gaining a shot at a Japan Showcase, which today is worth from US$ 15 to more than US$ 100 in traditional foil, seems to us a favorable trade for people who open few packs.

The Collector Booster is the point that deserves attention. Three fewer cards for the same price is less product, even if they are cards with little market value. And, if Japan Showcase also comes in the Booster Pack, the exclusivity that supported part of the price of those versions in the Collector shrinks. Our suggestion: do not decide on buying a Nauctis box before Wizards publishes the full contents and the odds.

God Packs, finally, are too rare to factor into the math of someone who opens one or two boxes. They are likely to make more noise in pack-opening streams, as ICv2 observed, than change the expected value of a pack.

Quick summary

  • Collector Booster loses 3 cards (2 foil commons and 1 foil uncommon), with no price change according to Wizards.
